The Order of Forgotten Mysteries #15: Paris

Perhaps among the most famous things that bothered and interested the zombie community for a long time was the importance of the capital of France. We knew for a long time that Black Ops I’s final DLC was originally planned to include a map set in Paris, which was last minute changed to the fan-favourite Moon. But besides the fact that the Moon map files were still named ‘Paris’, we had no clue about how the hypothesized map would actually look like, concerning gameplay, layout and story. A couple of years ago Blundell ended the developers’ silence about this topic in a short interview with some youtuber. He described the spawn room instead of Area 51 to be beneath the Eiffel Tower, including the teleporter. Underneath it continued the map in the macabre Paris catacombs, and the Eiffel Tower itself was said to function as a massive power conduit. About the story itself we can only guess, but I personally assume there was some kind of MPD underground, as this map was going to be BO1’s conclusion where our beloved characters would finally confront the god-like Samantha. Perhaps, this ‘MPD-like device’ could even have been man-made, connected to the Eiffel Tower which functioned as some kind of HAARP: Manipulating brainwaves and controlling the minds of the undead. Group 935’s Paris Station might have housed their grandest invention: something that would enable a Deus ex Machina where Samantha intentionally or unintentionally got stuck in. Another possibility could be that the device and perhaps whole station was Illuminati, as the Paris Catacombs are by some believed to historically have housed many secret conferences and meetings of the secret order. Would also fit with the whole conspiracy idea of the Illuminati brainwashing and mindcontrolling everyone.

But alas, the Paris map will never be. That leaves all our discussing about it useless right? Well actually, no, it remains a fact that a picture about something what appears to be a Group 935 station with the Eiffel Tower in the background can be found in Der Riese. So the existence of a Paris base is still completely canon! What I wanted to discuss in this episode of OoFM is what use this station had. You see, Paris is actually one of the largest and overcrowded cities in the continent Europe, and combined with the fact that it is located in a country that resisted against the government of Nazi-Germany, the funders of Group 935, seems to controverse with the sciencific organisation having a station here. From all locations, why did they need to have a base in Paris? I personally believe this had to do with the Eiffel Tower, the very heart of the city, that is known to have been located directly at or near the Group 935 station.

The Eiffel Tower, the gigantic metal obelisk that originates from 1889, seems to me to have the shape of some kind of large antenna. I think this is why there are several conspiracies around the construction.

The first one I would like to share is the idea of it being an enormous Illuminati mind control device, similar to the H.A.A.R.P. In this link someone talks about it broadcasting signals that manipulate brain waves of human civilians. Remember the HAARP note in Shi no Numa, while it was built in ‘93 by the US? It is clear that Group 935 had another HAARP somewhere else, or was planning to construct one. Maybe they used the already-existing Eiffel Tower. It would also make sense why they had the prototype in France, as the Nazi-Government might have been more in favour to use the French as ‘human guinea pigs’ rather than Germans so the project had to be executed on foreign soil.

I also find it particular that right after BO1’s last map, Moon, which was supposed to be Paris, we get an entire game (BO2) devoted to charging up Towers that are able to manipulate the Aether and control the world...

Anyways, the other conspiracy is about something entirely else: ‘Projekt Eiffel Tower’, experimental space travel. Somehow, the metal skeleton of the Eiffel Tower could be used to use worm hole technology to shoot things to any planet or moon that can be detected. This would tie with the original plan of the proposed Paris map that there was an MTD underneath the Eiffel Tower: the triangular form of the Tower would be used to concentrate the energy of any teleported subject and blast it away far away in space or perhaps, any realm outside ours. Perhaps the Eiffel Tower could be used to amplify the energy field of a teleporter and open up a gateway to Agartha.

Anyway, what do you all think? What role did the Paris station had in Group 935’s final plan? Or was it, perhaps, a station under the control of Richtofen’s secret split group or even the Illuminati? Don’t hesitate to share your ideas!

This is a neat What-if topic! It makes you wonder where the story would have gone had the last map of BO1 been set on Earth. On one hand, if the team had already planned to do maps in the upcoming BO2 with survivors on Earth after some kind of apocalypse, maybe things would have played out the same, with Richtofen entering the MPD, and Maxis, still alive on the Moon base, sending rockets to Earth, starting an apocalypse and maybe killing Ultimis in the process. I think there were always plans to have some kind of Group 935 activity on the Moon, given the lights on the Moon in Der Riese:

Given the extended occupation by the Germans of Paris, from 1940 to 1944, it's very possible Group 935 established some kind of forward base there, akin to their base in Stalingrad in the Agonia fracture. They could have been testing early mind control on the local population, with the Eiffel Tower being used as a broadcast device, like you mentioned. In the story as it is now, perhaps the Eiffel Tower was where Richtofen created and tested the first GPD he would need for his plan.

Also, a fact not often remembered is that in the WaW version of Der Riese, each teleporter has a wooden board on the ground nearby marked with a country. There's GER, FRA, and ENG. Germany makes sense, and if there was a base in Paris, then France makes sense too. Germany never had ground troops in Great Britain, but did they perhaps still have a base there from before the war that we've never heard about? Perhaps it even ties in to Maxis's relationship with Monty, and the wide use of English in Group 935?

Given the countless references to Moon and/or Luna in prior zombie maps, I assume that something related to the Moon was inevitable. Perhaps the original plan was that the Lunar base was a general Group 935 facility, from where Maxis reached out to fire the rockets on Earth

I didn't know this, thank you for sharing, those are certainly interesting. Reminds me of the initial idea of Group 935 being independant of any country's government and having members from all over the world, or for the conpiracy theme of with the Nazi's-alligned Group 935 having infiltrated higher ranks in the non-axis countries as well. As for GER, I assume it is connected with Kino or Verrückt, or any other Group 935 station. FRA would be connected with the nation's capital, another confirmation of the canonity of the Paris station. Possible related to the experimentation of mindcontrol, for that matter. ENG is a tough one and it actually reminds me of the Broken Arrow London HQ as seen in Groom Lake. I mean, we know that Broken Arrow didn't exist yet at the time of Der Riese, but maybe there already was organisation somewhere in London that knew about 115 and the undead, and possible initially cooperated with Group 935. Another possibility could be, as you said, Doctor Maxis' potential cooperation with Doctor Monty. It has been theorized that Samantha's room and Maxis' house, a theme already prominent in the earliest zombie maps, may in fact lay on the British countryside. The House part in the map Revelations is even named in the code 'Sheffield', a city in central England. See here our prior discussion concerning that.
