Like the top comment says, it probably means fire in Norse or some language..

While I don't want to start rumours but, my friend (who is a keen zombie player mind you) says he saw some random online wielding a "different, golden staff" that he's never seen before. I trust him entirely, but this was early on so I don't know if it was just an illusion :S

Though I'm not too sure exactly what you're talking about, I guess it would be something like these letters that you see when in zombie blood mode?

That says "WIND". Letting you know that the wind staff goes in this giant for the next step of the side quest.

The letters are called "Runes".

They form different types of (Old Nordic) alphabets such as the Elder Futhark & Younger Futhark.

Edit - Here is a picture of the "FIRM" lettering. Using the table above, it translates to "Fire"

So if you can see writing that says "Firm", this would translate to "Fire", letting you know that the fire staff goes here. (or if your a Youtuber, you can say that this means there is a 5th staff because you don't know what the writing actually is)
