In Darkness

10th July 1998, 6:30pm

In Southern Asia a team of human behavioural researchers decided to see what would happen to 10 people if they were concealed in a room of total darkness for 2 weeks. They would research the effects of confinement, light depravity and lack of contact from the outside world. The 10 test subjects – who were labelled alphabetically – were South Asian sex offenders who were of death toll either way so there was no worry about side effects. The researchers set up a room with ten beds and food to last the 10 subjects for 2 weeks. The room was bugged with night vision cameras and a one way mirror. It was a square room with five beds lined up on either side. The subjects were forbidden to take any kind of light source with them, but may take any books or magazines they may have owned. To be persuaded, the subjects were promised counselling and possible freedom after the test was completion of the experiment. The test subjects entered the room, plummeted into darkness and the testing begins.

After a lot of complaining of the conditions for 10 minutes, the test subjects finally settled and became used to their surroundings. They were seen pacing up and down the chamber, supposedly from boredom, and talking to each other. The conversations seemed pretty random, yet normal. At first they were discussing the implications of being locked in a dark room and what it would accomplish, later it moved on to more casual talk such as football games, T.V and other topics.

12th July 1998, 2:13pm

The researchers jumped to life when one of the test subjects began whispering to himself, so quiet that the microphones could not pick up what they were saying. Increasing the sensitivity of the microphones they made out that the man was repeating the words “Where is it? Where is it? Where is it?” The researchers believed they were making great progress with this experiment as the subjects were showing increased brain activity and heart rate, possibly because of anxiety. The whispering soon stopped 7 minutes later and the test subject returned to his bed where he whistled random tunes.

12th July 1998, 3:41pm

All noise was silenced in the test chamber; the researchers were beginning to think there would be nothing else to report other than the whispering. Movement stirred in the chamber and the researchers watched closely. A subject curled into a ball like position on his bed, his back began shaking up and down and soon he was weeping loudly. The microphone sensitivity had to be reduced to nearly bottom level in order to stop the researchers going deaf. The crying screeched and echoed through the whole of the testing area, other subjects simply continued to lay and whistle on their beds as if nothing had happened. The subject wouldn’t stop crying for 3 hours until it eventually came to a sudden pause. A moment of silence, the once crying subject began to laugh, a deep and terrifying chuckle of horror. Researchers jumped at the new found data. The laugh became higher pitched and fast, eventually the subject was laughing like a maniac. It carried on for a further 5 and half hours, and promptly stopped.

13th July 1998, 6:16am

Researchers turned on their screen to monitor the test subjects. To their shock, they found one of the subjects staring directly at the camera, standing in the middle of the room and stared with glowing eyes. The scientists concluded that this was an impossibility as the room bared no light so the subject shouldn’t have been able to see the camera, they he continued to stare. 12 minutes later and one of the subjects began to shake violently. He fell from sitting on the edge of a bed to lying on the floor quivering madly; again the other subjects did nothing. The quivering man then rose to his feet after a few seconds, and then continued to sit on his bed.

13th July 1998, 1:12pm

Researchers were baffled by the crying/laughing man and the quivering man. They checked all the factors of the chamber (pressure, air quality, etc.), and they found nothing to make them behave this way. They figured it may have been a paranoid side effect, but nothing was proven. They did a head count of the subjects, 1 was missing. Switching to a heat vision camera, they found that the missing subject was not hiding anywhere in the test chamber. They activated the emergency camera on the other side of the room to find the missing subject crawling on the wall with his hands and feet. He giggled playfully. Like a child whose mother found them hiding under their bed, the subject knew they’d seen him.

13th July 1998, 9:58pm

After circling the chamber several times, the man crawling on the wall dropped and curled into a ball on the floor. The man staring at the camera sat on his bed. When the researchers began to relax, growling was heard from one of the subjects. They saw it was the staring man. He was on all fours on his bed and growling as if about to pounce for prey. He leaped off the bed and onto the back of another subject. They both barked and clawed at each other before collapsing to the ground. The subject that was jumped on plunged his teeth into the neck of the other subject. He slurped the blood from the neck until the man was lifeless on the ground, again no one reacted.

He stood up and returned to lying on the bed.

14th July 1998, 2:36pm

Some of the researchers began to think it’d be a good idea to cancel the test as the results were beginning to get horrific, but the head of the research team decided it would be a good idea to continue monitoring them as he believed that this was progress. One of the more ‘less active’ test subjects, who was curled into a ball and cradling back and forth, began to sing nursery rhymes. “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall… Humpty Dumpty had a great fall…” He sung slow and deeply, echoing as he went. His head slowly turned up to the cameras, all the researchers recoiled in terror and a few even vomited when they saw… the subject’s eyes were ripped out. The empty, blood oozing sockets continued to point at the cameras, if his eyes were still with him, they would be transfixed on the lens. The subject smiled grimly and whispered, “…Now I see better…” A researcher threw up again before running out the door.

14th July 1998, 5:11pm

The researchers and scientists agreed that ending the test would be in the best interest of everyone. One of them held a small microphone to their mouth a spoke to the subjects, “The test is now over, the doors will be opening soon.”

The subject that drunk the blood rose to his feet, “Leave us.” He said.

“Please comply or we shall be forced to shoot.”

“Enter and you’ll all die…”

Baffled, the researchers were intrigued by this change of character, the tests were scheduled to continue until further notice.

15th July 1998, 2:00am

The very instant the clock hit 2 o’clock one of the other subjects began screaming. A deafly howl that caused the researchers to cover their ears. They looked at the screen; the subject was stretching his mouth more and more. The skin around his mouth began to rip, blood oozed like gel. Soon enough the whole of his cheeks were torn apart. The blood was now pouring onto the floor, and eventually the man flopped like a fish to the ground. The 8 remaining subjects moved slowly and gathered round the now dead man. When they cleared after about 28 minutes, the corpse was now hollowed out of organs. Blood around the other subject’s mouths proves that they had ripped through his mid-rift…and fed.

15th July 1998, 11:26pm

A subject walked from his bed to the centre of the room and looked towards the camera, the man with no eyes giggled. As if trying to warn the researchers, the staring man opened his mouth and bared his teeth to the camera. They were sharp, sharper than they were, like an animals. He hissed at the camera and returned to his bed, this shook and worried the scientists as it goes against all logic for them to be behaving in this way. One by one the subjects began laughing hysterically, like they were mocking the scientists for knowing so little about the situation.

16th July 1998, 5:22pm

The subject that stared at the camera yesterday leaped out of bed and ran to the wall furthest from the camera. He began screaming and smashing his head against the wall repeatedly. There seemed to be great impact between the subjects face and the steel chamber walls. Teeth burst out of mouth, and blood flew from his nose and mouth. Eventually he hit the wall and stayed connected to it, blood from his head poured down the wall, the subject broke through his skull…yet he continued to scream. The monitors showed no pulse or brainwaves from the subjects, but the demonic scream from hell lasted for 4 minutes before he fell to silence. The researchers gazed from one to the other, 6 of them walked out the door, each of them saying “I quit.”

17th July 1998, 12:00pm

The researchers decided that to maintain sanity between them, the monitor would be turned off and only turned on every few minutes. There was nothing to report the first few times, but soon they found that the 7 subjects were gathering at the door leading into the rest of the laboratory. Some of the researchers chuckled at the idea that the subjects thought they could escape… he was soon silenced. The subject with no eyes tilted his head up towards the camera; lights in the research lab began to flicker. The researchers, scientists and emergency soldiers all began to panic. Preparing for the worst they grabbed night vision and heat vision goggles, soldiers took weapons as well. The monitor was now totally busted, as were the lights, the darkness had now come to them. A crash of steel doors smacking against a wall sounded, the test subjects were now loose.

17th July 1998, 12:05pm

Screeches echoed through the hallway, the soldiers gathered the researchers into corner where they thought they’d be safe. Movement stirred in the hallway across the room, mere shadows dashing out of sight, soldiers took aim. Footsteps and creaking were heard around the room, it had become apparent that the subjects were in the room. When all was quiet, a subject leaped in front of the soldiers, roaring viciously and hungrily at them. When they opened fire the subject continued to run at them, plunging his fist into one of the men’s stomachs in the process. His blood dripped and poured over the subject’s arm which was holding him up. Bullets pumped into the subject, and eventually he fell. A soldier flew past the others, and was found dangling in the corner, with his neck held by another subject, believed to be the one who was staring at the camera earlier. The soldier screaming for help before the subject bit out his tongue. Blood now filled his mouth, and the soldier was dropped by the subject into several chemicals which, when mixed together, combusted into a raging fire.

17th July 1998, 12:07pm

The subject then leaped into the fire, and ran at the soldiers while set ablaze. Another subject crawled down the wall to behind the researchers and the slaughter began. Decapitated heads rolled out in front of the soldiers, two of which were then leaped on while distracted. The burning subject was clawing at a man’s face, and was soon stabbed in the back of the neck and fell dead, though the soldier he was attacking had already passed away. The second subject that leaped on a soldier ripped out his throat and continued to swallow it.

17th July 1998, 12:09pm

The throat-swallowing subject was dragged of the soldier and strangled to death by the dead man’s brother in a vengeance rage. Now all the researchers and scientist were dead, piled on top of each other by two subjects. Mass amount of gun fire was aimed in that direction. One subject fell with blood spraying on the walls, while the other swung at a soldier, taking off his bottom jaw. Both the subject and the man he attacked soon fell dead. The two remaining soldiers checked their weaponry, they were out of ammo. A subject giggled in the distance, then pounced from behind. The soldier he landed on was now on the floor and begging for help. The subject held his throat and sank his teeth into the soldier’s crotch causing him to scream his agony. The remaining soldier vomited, and then proceeded to smack his gun around the subject’s head, releasing him off the man who was now beyond life.

17th July 1998, 12:16pm

He lunged down on one knee and held a knife to the subject’s throat. “What are you?!” he screamed.

The subject chuckled darkly, “I’m surprised you don’t know.”

“Don’t play games with me!”

“We are the very thing you turn your lights on at night to avoid, we are the being staring at you from the corner of your living room where you think you’re safe, and we’re what are staring back at you in the mirror.” The soldier looked confused. “We are the darkness.”

The gun rose in the air and slammed down on the subject’s face repeatedly. Soon blood splattered up and around, the soldier walked away.

17th July 1998, 12:20pm

The only survivor of the experiment walked out of the laboratory and stared at the blazing sun. He smiled slightly to himself with the thought that he can see his family. There was small growl from behind him; he lashed his body round in response. The subject with no eyes smiled at him, and stepped slowly back into the darkness. When the subject’s laughter echoed out the door, the soldier turned back round, eyes wild. He bared his teeth, they were sharp, sharper than they were, like an animals. He continued into the distance.

End

Wow, extremely good stuff! Very scary stuff! Great work!

Personally, I enjoy a story where there is a character that you can kind of relate to, with an actual protagonist, but I found this to be an exception. Really stellar stuff. You should look into trying to publish this. If you want to, I can do a full critique. :) Awesome read, Brief!
