  • The Rift Is Coming

    Kieran L

News broke this morning that Facebook's ever growing virtual reality headset Oculus Rift will finally become available to the public as it goes on commercial sale in early 2016. Nate Mitchell, vice president at Oculus VR tweeted " Extremely excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping Q1 2016! We can't wait to get it in your hands", putting an end to months of speculation about just when we would get to see the virtual reality headset on our shelves.

We got more confirmation after a follow up on the Oculus VR blog, which had this to say about the consumer model: "[the consumer model] builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype, with improved tracking systems that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit".

No price tag has been placed on the Oculus Rift as of yet, however pre-orders of the device will become available later this year, so we won't have long to wait until we discover the cost of what could be the next big step in gaming. However, Oculus Rift don't have a complete monopoly over the virtual reality headset concept, with Sony preparing to launch their Morpheus headset during the same period of next year, as well as Valve teaming up with HTC on the Vive VR headset, which will launch later this year. One thing is for sure however, we are entering a new era of gaming, and the Oculus Rift could well be at the forefront of that new era. The Rift is coming.

I'm still around, still playing Zombies all the time, and loving it. Recent lore developments on Astra got me in my feels. Shout out to Tac, Slade, and everyone here who paved the way for this insane little world we've all enjoyed.

Amidst the dark and eerie night
A choice to make – to run or fight?
      The undead horde approaches fast
Armed with weapons, till the very last
In Call of Duty: World at War - Zombies
The battle for survival never ceases
A test of skill, courage and wits
As waves of zombies just never quits
Blood-soaked grounds and a burning sky
The stakes are high, the danger nigh
But in this game, we rise above
To conquer the undead with brute, tough love
With finger on the trigger and heart in hand
We face the terror, and take a stand
For in this game, we live or die
With Call of Duty: World at War - Zombies, we must survive.

and later released worldwide on December 14, 2011.
The game features the same gameplay mechanics as its predecessor, with players fighting off waves of zombies as they try to survive for as long as possible. The game also includes a new storyline set in a Cold War-era Pentagon, with the characters from the original Zombies mode returning to fight off the undead.
The game allows for up to four players to play together via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and also includes a single-player mode with a new leaderboard system to track high scores.
Call of Duty: Black Ops – Zombies received mixed reviews upon release, with critics praising the game's addictive gameplay and multiplayer functionality, but criticizing the graphics and lack of content compared to the console versions of the game. Despite this, the game was a commercial success, with over a million downloads in its first week of release.

    • Netflix is no stranger to adapting video games into TV series, and the streaming giant looks to be tackling a live-action Persona series, Variety reports.  The series’ showrunner, writer, and executive producer is reportedly Christopher Monfette, a writer and producer of series such as Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and 9-1-1. Sega’s senior executive officer, Toru Nakahara, is attached as an executive producer. Nakahara served as a producer on all three Sonic the Hedgehog films. Netflix declined Variety’s request for comment.  We’ll have to wait to see if this Persona series is real, but this would certainly be an ideal time to announce such a project. The franchise has made headlines recently due to the reveal of a release date for Persona 4 Revival, a remake of the acclaimed RPG, and the announcement of Persona 6.   To learn about other upcoming Netflix video game adaptations, the company just revealed the first full trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 yesterday. It also has a live-action series based on Assassin’s Creed in the works and is developing movies based on Gears of War and Bioshock. Netflix is also partnering with Life is Strange/Lost Records: Bloom & Rage developer Don't Nod for an unannounced adaptation.  [Source: Variety] View the full article
    • The Splatoon Raiders Direct outlined the structure of the upcoming single-player-focused title, and it looks packed with challenging encounters against hordes of Salmonids. If any raids get a little too punishing, an online feature will lend solo players support in a way that recalls modern Monster Hunter games. As detailed in Nintendo's video presentation, you can send out a call for help before beginning a raid--other players can select a "Go Help" option on the map to be matched with another player seeking help and join their lobby. Failing a raid results in players losing all the loot they collected in that session, but succeeding will give the helper a "help bonus" in the form of "nifty in-game rewards." If the raid is successful, there will be a cooldown period before you can call for help again. It's not unlike the SOS Flare mechanic from Monster Hunter World (and Monster Hunter Wilds). The big difference here is that in Monster Hunter, your player character will quite literally shoot up a flare in-game during a quest instead of calling for help from a menu. Of course, Splatoon Raiders lets you team up with up to three other players through online or local wireless play, but difficulty will scale depending on the number of players. GameSpot's preview of Splatoon Raiders observed how players' different builds can synergize with each other, and said that "multiplayer seems like a fertile ground for high-level raids against tough opponents." Preorder at Amazon Splatoon Raiders is the first spin-off and the first Switch 2 entry in the series. It launches on July 23 alongside other heavy hitters that month.
