  1. In a recent Sony corporate marketing strategy meeting, Sony president and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida reiterated how much of a leap forward the upcoming PlayStation 5 is, saying it's "100 times faster" than the current PS4. The statement echoes what Sony's Mark Cerny stated back in March, when he revealed the internal hardware of the next-generation console. The figure refers specifically to the speed differential between the two consoles in terms of processing game data, driven primarily by the PS5's custom SSD solution. A design so impressive, that Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney says not even high-end PCs can match it yet. "In order to further enhance the sense of immersion in games, we expect to improve not just the resolution, but the speed of games. For example, through a custom‐designed high‐speed SSD, we plan to realize game data processing speeds that are approximately 100 times faster than PS4," states Yoshida in the presentation. "Game load times should be much shorter, and players should be able to move through immense game worlds in almost an instant." Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
  2. If you didn't know, your Amazon Prime membership comes with a handful of free games each month. Twitch Prime, one of the perks of Amazon Prime, typically offers up five free games each month that are yours to keep forever. Normally, you get a variety of indie titles, but throughout the summer Twitch Prime will give away a ton of classic arcade games. Twitch Prime has partnered with SNK to ring in the NEOGEO arcade's 30th anniversary by giving away 22 SNK games. The first batch of freebies goes live May 26. Out of the gate, seven SNK games will be free, which are a mix of fighting games and shoot 'em ups. Five fighting games--Art of Fighting 2, Fatal Fury Special, The King of Fighters 2000, The King of Fighters 2002, and Samurai Shodown II--will be free to snag on May 26. You can also grab the shoot 'em up Pulstar and its spiritual successor Blazing Star. Twitch Prime hasn't revealed every free SNK game that will drop throughout the summer, but we do know a handful of titles to look forward to in the coming months: Metal Slug 2, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, The Last Blade 2, Sengoku 3, King of Monsters, and The King of Fighters' 98 Ultimate Match Final Edition. The remaining nine freebies will be revealed at a later date. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
  3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered has performed well in the sales numbers for Activision since its March 31 launch on PlayStation 4. SuperData, a digital data analytical firm, has stated in a new update on the worldwide market that Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered has surpassed 3.4M units sold in the month of April. And, based off the reports from SuperData, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, launching in just one day in March, sold almost 622,000 copies that month on PS4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered showed there is still demand for single-player Call of Duty experiences by selling 3.4M units in April. The remaster of the single-player portion of the 2009 title also sold 622K copies the previous month (it did not launch until March 30). The game will likely perform well on Xbox One and PC over the course of May, since it was exclusive to PlayStation 4 until April 30. We won’t know the full extent of its popularity till May’s data comes in, as the game launched on Xbox One and PC on the last day of April. NPD Firm also released their data for the games market sales of April, which showed Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered as the #7 best selling game overall in April, and the #2 best selling game overall on Xbox One for the month. PC data not available fully because of it being sold on first party store, Battle net. 4. Nintendo has rolled out a small new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. According to the patch notes on the company's support website, New Horizons' 1.2.1 update "addressed issues to further ensure an enjoyable gaming experience," but it doesn't go into any more detail beyond that. You'll need to install the latest update to continue playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons online. If the update isn't installed automatically, you can do so manually by highlighting the game's icon on the Switch dashboard, pressing the Plus button, and then selecting Software Update. New Horizons is in the midst of its Stamp Rally event to celebrate International Museum Day. The event runs through May 31 and has you collecting stamps from different stations that are hidden around the museum's fish, fossil, and insect exhibits. 5. Click here to watch embedded media Hot off the heels of Neo Geo's 30th anniversary, SNK is opening up its library to Twitch Prime members. Today, the two companies announced over 20 games would be available throughout the summer, spread across three drops. This type of venture is the first of its kind between Twitch and another video game company, but hopefully it opens the door for many more similar collaborations. “SNK’s arcade classics are as iconic as they come," Twitch Prime VP Ethan Evans told Game Informer, “and with more than 20 legendary titles from the Neo-Geo era, we’re making more free games available to Prime members than we ever have before. If you grew up feeding quarters into arcade cabinets you already know how special these games are — and if you didn’t, you’re really in for a treat.” The games are available for a limited time, but once Prime members claim them, they can keep them forever. The first drop comes this Tuesday on May 26 and will include the following: Art of Fighting 2 – In the second installment of the renowned Art of Fighting trilogy, players compete as one of 12 fighters for the coveted title of King of Fighters. Blazing Star – Released in 1998, this shoot ‘em up side scroller and spiritual sequel to the acclaimed Neo Geo shooter Pulstar lets players pilot incredible aircraft across a number of dangerous missions, filled with enemies aiming to take them down. Fatal Fury Special – This 1993 arcade classic is an updated version of the acclaimed Fatal Fury 2, expanding the original character roster to 15 playable fighters and introducing new gameplay changes such as the all-new combo system. The King of Fighters 2000 – In the second chapter in the legendary King of Fighters Nests Saga, players must take down the secret Nests society to stop their evil ambitions and bring peace. The King of Fighters 2002– This fan-favorite title was released in 2002 and features the epic return of the series’ 3-on-3 battle system, along with a number of popular characters from the franchise. Pulstar – Released back in 1995, this groundbreaking arcade game was the first SNK release to use pre-rendered graphics and if often regarded as among the best-looking shoot ‘em up games for the Neo Geo system. Samurai Shodown II – Battle against 15 of the world’s fiercest warriors in this fun fencing fighting game first launched back in 1994. The date of the next drop has yet to be announced, but SNK and Twitch already confirmed the following games for the roster: Garou: Mark of the Wolves, The Last Blade 2, Metal Slug 2, The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match Final Edition, Sengoku 3 and King of the Monsters. SNK is known for its fighting games and being a staple in the golden era of arcades, so don't miss out on this opportunity to play them on your PC. 7. After 20 years of anticipation it was clear that Final Fantasy 7 Remake would make a big impact, but its first month of NPD sales has shown just how big. The acclaimed remake from Square Enix was the top-seller in North America for the month, and set a few sales records as well. According to the NPD Group, FF7 Remake is already the #3 best-selling game year-to-date, behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, respectively. It's already the top-selling game of the year on PlayStation 4. NPD also noted that it set a Final Fantasy franchise launch month record, taking the title from Final Fantasy XV. 9. When you think of the highest-level Fortnite player in the world, chances are you'd imagine one of the best players in competitive Fortnite. Perhaps even a streamer, or one of the dedicated players currently leading the pack for most wins in the game. The actual answer, it would seem, is a lot weirder. Meet Talocan, who's recently come to the attention of the Fortnite community for his ridiculously high level - currently at 520, at the time of writing. A mysterious figure, Talocan broadcasts his grinding methods via hours-long YouTube streams, with no commentary and only the occasional comment in the live chat. And he's not playing regular matches: instead, he lands at Steamy Stacks, opens all the chests there and quits the match. Over and over. Read more View the full article
  10. PlayStation's Days of Play sale, an annual event that normally runs during E3, will return in a couple of weeks with deals on products exclusive to the PS4. Unlike recent years, however, Days of Play won't feature PS4 consoles or PSVR hardware, which feels a tad strange considering the PS5 arrives later this year. That said, Days of Play will still offer great discounts on exclusive games, including MLB The Show 20, Nioh 2, Dreams, and more. Days of Play runs from June 3 to June 17, and all major retailers typically join in on the fun. On the games front, MLB The Show 20 will be discounted to $40, which is the lowest price we've seen since the baseball sim released in March. Another 2020 game, Nioh 2, will be $40 during the sale, but it's already on sale for that price at Amazon. Nioh 2 is a challenging action-RPG that will likely appeal to fans of Dark Souls. Dreams, Media Molecule's enchanting create-your-own-game experience, will be discounted to $30. PS4 exclusives from 2019 will be slashed to low prices, too. Days Gone and MediEvil will be $20 each, while Death Stranding will be 50% off at $30. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
  11. Nvidia reveals today that it has created a neural network that fully simulates the classic Pac-Man on the event of the Namco coin-op's 40th anniversary. On the face of it, this might not sound like a big deal - Pac-Man is a relatively straightforward game that takes place in a simplistic, static environment, so using an AI to study its rules and perfectly replicate its game logic doesn't sound outlandishly complex. Except that isn't what's happening. There is no engine here, no game logic and no traditional rasteriser used in the AI recreation of the game. Instead, everything generated at a per-pixel level is coming directly from the neural network, based on what it 'knows' about how Pac-Man works. This rendition of Pac-Man essentially plays out as an AI 'thinks' it should - and remarkably, it works. Nvidia is working on something that it refers to as GameGAN (GAN meaning 'generative adversarial network'). It works by using two neural networks working against one another - a generator and a discriminator. It's the same kind of AI that has been used extensively for a number of applications, including the creation of AI-generated high resolution texture packs for retro games. In the case of Nvidia's GameGAN, the AI studied 50,000 games of Pac-Man before 'learning' how the game works generally, and how user input affects what happens on-screen. "This is the first research to emulate a game engine using GAN-based neural networks," says Seung-Wook Kim, an NVIDIA researcher and lead author on the project. "We wanted to see whether the AI could learn the rules of an environment just by looking at the screenplay of an agent moving through the game. And it did." Read more View the full article
  12. Pokémon Go will take its servers offline and be unplayable for seven hours next Monday, 1st June. It'll be like 2016 all over again! It's an unprecedented outage for the game, which hasn't deliberately gone wholesale offline since its early rework of the game's gyms. Here in the UK, the timing works out as between 7pm and 2am on Tuesday. In the US, it'll mean the game is down most of the day (11am until 6pm Pacifc). Read more View the full article
  13. Sabrent has announced an 8TB M.2 solid state drive to join its Rocket Q family, featuring double the capacity of the next largest model, PC Gamer reports. While pricing hasn't been released yet, it's very likely to be out of the budget for most PC gamers--however as Steam libraries grow and game installs take up more space, it's tech to keep an eye on. While there are already 8TB drives available in the 2.5 inch market, Sabrent's is the first to fit it into the smaller, cable-free M.2 form factor. As with Sabrent's other Rocket Q SSDs, the 8TB drive uses NVMe technology with a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface. While not many details are available about the new model yet, we can expect it to be quite fast based on the smaller Rocket Q models. While we can all look forward to this tech being developed further and eventually coming down in price, Sabrent's first 8TB M.2 model is unlikely to be that affordable for enthusiast gamers. The company's 4TB M.2 SSD sells for $759.99, so it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest the 8TB model will retail for over twice that price. View the full article
  14. It's been 10 years since the release of Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar's much-loved ode to the wild west, and the team behind it is feeling nostalgic. IGN has published an extensive interview with many of the folks behind the game, including insights into the challenges the team faced when creating the iconic Xbox 360 and PS3 title. One of the running themes of the interview is that the game, which was technically a sequel to the PS2 game Red Dead Revolver, faced a lot of challenges ahead of release. Art director Josh Bass, who is also co-studio head for developer Rockstar San Diego, says that while the game was in development, they "would often hear from external sources that a Western game was never going to be a success." Ultimately, this motivated the team "to solve the challenges and create something new." "I knew in my heart that it was going to exceed those expectations," Bass continues, "but at the same time we had to ask ourselves if our fans would make the emotional connection with this experience that we all had." The game's eventual reception was important, he says, because it proved that players had connected to protagonist John Marston. Continue Reading at GameSpotView the full article
  15. Game developers are excited about the potential of next-generation console hardware, and as we get closer to seeing the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 become a reality, devs are giving us more detail about what those upgrades actually mean. In an interview with Wccftech, game director Stuart Tilley of Firesprite, the studio behind horror game The Persistence, talked about what the SSD technology--and its faster load times--means for games developed on next-gen consoles. "The SSD is going to be massive to allow us to create larger worlds that load faster, to move quicker within them. It opens up possibilities for us," Tilley said. "The new positional sound stuff is great for like, for games, being able to like play sound effects that feel like they're around you while you're on the couch, it's gonna make another big improvement." 24. Mario Kart Tour is expanding with two new members of the Kong family. Joining Donkey and Diddy are Funky and Dixie Kong, both of whom debuted in the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES. Neither character is available in Nintendo's flagship Mario Kart game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, and this is actually Dixie Kong's first appearance in the Mario Kart series. Both characters look to be modelled on their appearances in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The characters are joining the game as part of the Jungle Tour, which will present a new opportunity to collect Grand Stars. You can see them in action in the trailer below. Funky Kong is something of a fan-favorite, an extremely 90s character whose sunglasses, bandana, and surfboard denote a very era-specific version of "cool". Dixie was Diddy's companion in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, and the main protagonist of Donkey Kong Country 3. Mario Kart Tour recently updated to version 2.1.0, which added new multiplayer options. Starting June 1, GameSpot will be hosting Play For All--a celebration of all things gaming. 25. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 will revisit some iconic levels from the series' past, but it's also modernizing several elements--including the skaters. In a new video, Steve Caballero--who first appeared in Pro Skater 2 back in 2000--has revealed that he mo-capped new facial expressions for his in-game character, who looks just like he does now. In the video below, Caballero says that he now sees a lot of skaters doing the tricks from these games in real-life, and we get a look at the motion capture set-up that is being used to capture the current-day look of these characters. Although they did not capture Caballero on a skateboard--he says they wanted to get new facial expressions from him--the new in-game model looks a lot like him. The video also shows Caballero skating through the first game's Warehouse level--which confirms, essentially, that characters introduced in the sequel will be able to skate through levels from the first.
