What really caught my attention in this was the fact you said "hit the wall". There have been some accounts in which the wall can act as a no-damage barrier in which you will not take fall damage if you are close to a horizontal/flat surface. The rock glitch in Moon's Biodome allows players - who had Phd Flopper - to create impact explosions while diving against the rock. In this case, I'm assuming it acted as a safeguard so you wouldn't receive any form of fall damage.
