  1. Great topic! Anyone have any screenshots to share of these unique books?

Earth Gems and Minerals - Is this a typo or are there two books on the same subject?

Rocks & Gemstones - IMO it's something an alchemist would want to read

There's another one on this image for Paper Machete GURU. I have no clue..

Mine Spelunking - I agree with InfestLithium that this is a joke on escape plans. Might be a reference to Shangri-la, but I doubt it.

Alcatraz Swim Team Yearbook - Another comical reference to an escape plan.

Time Management - Dual meanings for this one. If you are doing time in the slammer, you might as well learn how to manage it. Also, a reference to time-travel, breaking the cycle, and all the weird time warp stuff going on in the storyline.

The Art of _______ - Might be a reference to Magick as an Art. More likely a reference to all the art in the game (comic book art, paintings, graphitti, etc), similar to the "How to Draw" ad on the Moon loading screen.

  2. The first time I got to round 50 on nuketown (solo), jugg was the very last perk machine to drop. And it dropped on round 18. Having survived that many rounds without jugg and not going down once, I knew I was in the zone for an epic game.

  3. IMO, they loaded this map with new toys to play with. I can't complain.

I don't care about all the dumb weapons they took out of the box. We have AK47's, Deathmachines, and Blundergats now. That's what you really wanted out of the box anyways, right?

The new wall weapons are awesome too.

Im happy to have more than enough choices of perks to pick for my loadout. The only perk I miss is Phd Flopper. Yet I'm happy that not every perk is available on every map. Variety in perks helps give each map it's own feel.

  4. I believe the Warden summoned an evil God in his chambers, the same time the prisoners planned to execute their escape plan. The portals of hell were opened up at 9:35 PM. 935 being a symbolically evil number in our storyline.

  5. In case you haven't seen it already, I have a thread about the Icarus tie-in's over here:

    viewtopic.php?f=149&t=30935

I'm fully onboard with your ideas about the Icarus mythology playing itself out in a more modern setting. The fact that the make-shift plane gets struck down by lightening during it's ascent is more than just coincidence.

  6. I recently found another ingame connection to Icarus.

In this part of Al's Journal, he is refering to this comic book sketch found in pieces around the map

Props to PTG for finding this

Did Al name his flying super-hero "Icarus" as well?

I want to point out one of the Editor's notes at the bottom that reads

"A FLYING MAN - DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE A MAN CAN FLY?"

I think we all know the answer to that one

  7. One thing worth mentioning is that superhero comics were not around in 1932 when our game takes place. The ingame superhero sketch is actually ahead of it's time (maybe why the editor doesn't appreciate it.)

I personally think the sketch is meant to represent a combination of the most classic of comic book super-heroes. Here's where I think inspiration was cherry-picked from...

    Superman

Superman was the very first comic book superhero. He first appeared in Action Comics #1 published on April 18, 1938. Flying over skyscrapers in full costume with Lois Lane in his arms is as classic as comic book imagery gets.

    Shock Gibson

Props to Spider from NGT for suggesting it's Shock Gibson. I can definitely see where he's coming from there. Shock Gibson first appeared in Oct. 1939. The color scheme of the character's costume, and story arc, draw parallels to things happening in the game.

    Hawkman

The helmet on this superhero reminds me very much of Hawkman's helmet. Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1 published in January 1940. Hawkman is the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian Prince who had discovered that the mysterious named "ninth metal" could negate the effects of gravity and allow him to fly. He donned Icarus-like wings to help him control his flight. Hawkman also uses ancient weapons from artifacts at the museum he curates at. That all sounds similar to stuff in our game, right.

    Captain Marvel

The whole costume and look definitely reminds me of Captain Marvel aka Shazam the most. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 published in February 1940. Whenever young Billy Batson speaks the wizard Shazam's name "SHAZAM!", he is then struck by a magic lightning bolt and transformed into "Earth's Mighiest Mortal" and empowered with the abilities of six archetypal, historical figures.

  8. Excellent work here InfestLithium. This is Asylum worthy, IMO.

With the Icarus connections, I think it's definitely worth investigating to see what other Greek mythologies might be present in this map.

I'm not convinced yet that the hellhounds and this Cerberus head are different from each other as far as in-game models go. Guess I'll need to see more side by side footage. But I assume the Cerberus heads are the same model as the hellhounds, just scaled up.

Is it just me, or does this illustration have the illusion of dual images in it?

Do you see an Old Woman or a Young Lady?

I see a wolf's head for sure. But if I look at it another way I see a devil/werewolf face with horns and a goatee, smiling at me.

This discussion reminds me of the Cerberus named "Fluffy" from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Sorcerer's Stone

This is one of the many reasons why churches in America were burning this children's book, saying it's filled with occult satanic references.

Great discussion guys. This is the type of stuff in Zombies I love most.

  9. This type of international drug trafficking by the US government is still going on today.

Opium production is up 20x's in Afghanistan since US military occupation began.

The drugs and drug money is used to help disrupt and cause instability throughout the region. And I'm sure tons of that Afghan opium is getting smuggled over to the US too. How else do you think that shit gets here?

I can't say it any better than this clip from John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood does... (@ 0:47)

  10. We all knew 3arc took a lot of inspiration from Indiana Jones, this pretty much confirms it.

    Nuketown

    http://community.activision.com/community/call_of_duty_xp_blog/blog/2011/09/03/treyarch-reveals-the-black-ops-multiplayer-you-never-saw

Nuketown wasn’t built in a day.

Actually, it was built in two. Nuketown was a happy accident and was never officially planned. According to Dan Bunting, Vahn saw Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull one night and came in the next day saying “We need to do a map like this!” So the team looked at old nuclear test footage -- “we watched movies of towers been blown to smithereens and it was really inspiring.”

Ugh, such a bitter sweet find!

Wish I had seen this article back in late 2011. That would have saved me a ton of research that eventually led me to the same conclusion

  11. So I was watching Ali-A's tutorial on how to build the Icarus plane...

And I noticed that once you've actually finished building the plane and fly off, you then get caught in the storm during ascension and crash onto the Golden Gate bridge. The only way to escape the bridge is to kill yourself using the electric chairs.

I find this final part to be once again all too similar to the events in the Icarus mythology. Our Icarus flew too high.

  12. ICARUS - IN-GAME

Al has named our make-shift glider plane, Icarus

I've Completed the aircraft's schematics, using only components that I know can be found within the grounds. However. everything hinges on gaining the trust and help of some of the facility's most notorious residents.

They may make fun of me sometimes, but they know I can do anything if I set my mind to it. I've planned enough jobs for them in the past to know that I can convince them to join me as Icarus takes flight.

Speaking of Icarus, same old story. The Editor defaced my art, scrawling nasty comments on every page.

When I get out, I'll show him how wrong he is...

There is a lot of significance in naming the plane glider Icarus.

    ICARUS - GREEK MYTHOLOGY

Icarus was the son of Daedalus, a talented craftsmean at the time of King Minos (Minotaur). They were both imprisoned in the minotaur's Labyrinth named Crete. Daedalus created a set of wings for both himself and his son, made of feathers and glued together by wax. Icarus was given his set of wings with strict orders not to fly too close to the Sun, or the sea. One day, when they both took flight, Icarus was overcome by the feelings of freedom the sensations of flying created. Deciding to ignore his father's warnings, Icarus flew higher into the sky, closer and closer to the Sun. Slowly but surely, the wax holding his feathered wings together started to melt away and Icarus fell into the sea and drowned.

    STORYLINE SIGNIFICANCE

Just like in the Greek mythology for Icarus, our crew is trapped on a prison, and must craft a way to fly to freedom with the unconventional materials made available to them. Daedalus and Icarus risked death for thier chance at freedom, and now our crew must do the same. The story of Icarus ends in tragedy. Will our crew meet the same fate on their crafted "Icarus"? The big EE achievement for this map might give a clue:

No One Escapes Alive: In Mob of the Dead, execute the escape plan.

I'm liking how in BO2 Zombies, there are pieces of the story that parallel to a previous historical/mythological events. For instance the Tower of Babble achievement in Tranzit closely paralleled the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. And it's no mistake that Die Rise is sub-named "The Great Leap Forward".

    SOMEBODY HINTED ICARUS TO US

I wonder if the somebody01 posts on the activision forums just gained traction with this new Icarus connection:

  13. I'm interested in finding out if this floating piece of paper has any clues on it.

And this super buff zombie boss that reminds me of the Nemesis zombie from the Resident Evil series... notice he has a "Guard" badge on him. And grenades strapped to his chest. I think this is the big guy with the chains you hear in the audio in Die Rise gameover screen.

  14. NEW PaP CAMO...?

As you can see in the image above, that's the AK-74 that they've added into MoTD, but with a VERY satanic kinda vibe being output from that camo it has... it may just be the new gun's camo, but with the Hellhounds, red eyes, red box light, and "Hellaxe" (what I'm calling the Tomahawk), along with the "Afterlife" mode, one can safely assume what's going on here. Not gonna lie, that IS a pretty kickin' camo there.

These symbols look to me like Alchemical symbols/circles of transmutation.

    Here's an example of one

Alchemy is often associated with satanism, occultism, magick spells. I've been seeing signs of possible alchemy connections in the game since at least Ascension.

AlphaSnake should be stoked to see this addition in the game. I think it's either a validation of his past PAP texture theories, or another nod from Treyarch that they look at his work for storyline ideas. Either way I see it as a compliment to him.

  15. Happy hunting everyone!

I just wanted to point out that I believe this image below is of the actual Loading Screen for the MotD map.

When I look at the tears along the sides of the left page, they match that of the tears on the comic pages from all the BO1 and BO2 maps.

Furthermore, if you examine the way the pages lay at the spine, you'll notice the pages on the left lay a little thicker. That means we are past the halfway point of this book. And if you have checked out my Nuketown loading screen analysis thread, then you already know that NTZ was the halfway point in the loading screen comic. So order wise, this makes sense.

The artist for these loading screens has been putting detail into the spine folds, and tears in the sides of the pages, to help indicate the order for each page of the comic book all along.

Here's an image the Nuketown loading screen so you can see what I'm talking about

The one thing that throws me off is the bottom right corner of the second page.

    Because it's not this:

    What do you guys think?
