Cornelius Pernell was a member of the OSS, the Station Chief of the Groom Lake Facility, and later the founder of the Broken Arrow Program. His first appearance was in a radio in Shi No Numa, where he was revealed to be the handler of OSS spy Peter McCain, who had infiltrated Group 935 and the Japanese Division 9. In Revelations, Pernell's female alter ego known as Cornelia Pernell, existing in a fracture of the Original Universe. In Alpha Omega, it is revealed that in the changed Original Universe the map takes place in, Pernell had been transformed into the Avogadro, an entity similar to "Him" in Tranzit.

Biography

During the Second World War, Cornelius Pernell worked for the OSS as the handler of several operatives. At the end of August 1945, he successful assisted the spy Peter McCain in infiltrating the scientific organization Group 935. After being transferred to Wittenau Sanatorium, otherwise known as the Asylum Facility, McCain suspected Group 935 was losing control of the experiments involving the undead. This led to Pernell sending in a Marine Recon unit, under the leadership of “Tank” Dempsey, to extract McCain. After McCain is outed as a spy and the extraction team failed, Pernell attempted to send a transmission to McCain to rendezvous at the Rising Sun Facility in the Japanese Empire. McCain received the message and one month later he parachuted over the Swamp Facility, only to die moments later.

Though many of his operatives have failed or died, Pernell's Ops led to him climbing up in the ranks until he became the Station Chief of the Groom Lake Facility in Nevada, where a large deposit of Element 115 had been found in 1937. In the early 1960s, a Matter Transference Device is being constructed at the site to establish a link with Griffin Station, located on the Moon. Around the same time, in 1963, Pernell was able to convince the American government of Samantha’s imminent threat to the United States, and gained approval for the Broken Arrow Program. Broken Arrow’s goal was to harness the power of 115, creating technological marvels, winning the Cold War, and possibly even bringing the dead back to life. Pernell also becomes the Director of the Program. He also initiated construction of an artificial MPD, known as the American Pyramid Device or APD, hidden in a nuclear testing ground named Camp Edward. Broken Arrow is also responsible for the Toy Soldier Project, creating robots called A.D.A.M.s to serve as soldiers for the United States.

Broken Arrow also began Operation MKAlpha, a counter-part Operation MKUltra, researching the use of the APD and Element 115 for interrogation and mind control. However, using the APD caused the Dark Aether to influence Pernell's mind, and he slowly followed the same path of insanity as Richthofen and Yuri. He recovers the body of Peter McCain at the Rising Sun Facility and uses him as a subject for the Elemental Shard, eventually reviving him. He also tortures Yuri Zagoyski to death during an MKAlpha interrogation with the APD, in an attempt to retrieve what he knows about Samantha and Agartha. In a radio in Alpha Omega, Pernell states that 'they' never leave him alone, that he wants to merge with the Aether and to reach Agartha. He also started experimenting on himself with the help of Dr. Hale, whose affection for him was well-known, by placing himself inside the APD. and pulling an electrical current from the Elemental Shard to flood the APD. In 1968, Peter McCain, four years after his revival, reports to the DoD that Pernell has become unstable and unable to lead Broken Arrow after several unauthorized experiments with the APD. Hearing this, Pernell tried to merge with the Aether via the APD and permanently exits his physical body in an effort to 'ascend', becoming the Avogadro. At that moment, George Sawyer and his men arrived at Camp Edward trying to halt Pernell, who released Nova-6 gas throughout the facility and unleashed zombies and A.D.A.M. Units, killing everyone. Eventually, Broken Arrow succeeded in containing him and secured him with an atomic bomb, might he ever be able to escape. Camp Edward was locked down and abandoned, leaving Pernell to be trapped in the APD. In 2025, agents Russman and George Barkley of Broken Arrow arrive at Camp Edward and send a sample of the Avogadro to the Hanford Site through the Pyramid Device. Later that week, the scientists at Hanford would accidentally create “Him”, an entity with a similar body and abilities to Avogadro. It is unknown what happened to Pernell after this or if he even survived the sample transfer.

In the alternate events of Alpha Omega, Camp Edward is visited by Primis and Ultimis with the goal of retrieving the Elemental Shard. This, however, unleashed Pernell, who maintained his ethereal form outside the pyramid and tried to kill the infiltrators. After it is revealed that the safety measure, the nuke, did not affect Pernell in any way, Ultimis and Primis were forced to battle him to acquire the Elemental Shard. Pernell was promptly defeated and sent to the Hanford Site by Rushmore, leading to the same events as Pernell's original ending.

Gameplay

Pernell appears on Alpha Omega as the boss at the end of the Story Quest. To defeat him, players will need to charge four back-up Life Force canisters located in the Lounge, Beds, Diner and Storage areas of the bunker. Each canister must be interacted with before it can be filled with the energy harnessed of destroyed A.D.A.M. Units. Pernell will follow and attack the players during the process. When a canister is charged, Avogadro will fill the room with electricity, blocking any access to it. Once all 4 canisters have been filled, the players must head back to APD Control and shoot the Avogadro, which will make him move in the direction you are shooting. He must be shot so that he gets in front of the APD entrance. Once he is in front he will be sucked into the APD: the Avogadro is defeated and the players will be able to collect the Elemental Shard.

Trivia

  • In a letter found in Alpha Omega, Pernell describes how he met two Angels in a dream, who told him he must leave his mortal body behind and ascend to Agartha.
  • While Pernell is referred to as Avogadro, the similar entity we encounter in Tranzit is in-game only referred to as "Him". This means Avogadro is merely a name for Pernell, and not of his sample in Hanford.
  • Avogadro is a reference to Avogadro's Law, stating that equal volumes of all gases at the same temperature and pressure, have the same number of molecules.
