A Teaser (More to Come)

Recommended Posts

-just a teaser, I wrote this for fun. No planning (which is new to me), I just started writing. Enjoy! ;)

Pain.

It flooded his head and coursed through his body as he sputtered back to consciousness. He inhaled and his lungs were set ablaze by the hot air that filled his lungs.

He rolled over and tried to wipe the ash from his eyes as his body heaved and tried to vomit food that wasn’t there.

Momentarily, his body relaxed and he sat up and took note of his surroundings. He was in a city, or rather, what had used to be a city.

The sky was red, tainted in certain parts by towers of black smoke. Buildings crumbled and hot winds blew pieces of rubble and paper by burning cars. The thick smoke cast a massive shadow over the entire scene and locked it in a grayish twilight color. The world was silent, as if it had been this way since the dawn of time, as if there had never been a living soul here.

The worst of it was the bodies.

Corpses littered the scene, some with bullet wounds, some burnt, some already rotting away, but all were encrusted within a layer of dried ash.

He rolled over, held his head and screamed a scream that resonated from his soul and seemed to shake the entire earth.

Tears began to stream down his face. He panted heavily as he stood to his feet. His body felt heavy, and upon looking down he discovered he was wearing a tactical vest and military fatigues.

Who am I?

He tentatively reached into his shirt and felt the curiously familiar feeling of dog tags tinkling against his chest. He pulled them out. “Marcus McGuiness” they read.

Marcus.

The name sounded familiar. Friendly. Comforting. It reminded him of some vague sense of peace. He decided it was a good name.

Marcus dusted himself off and checked himself for weapons. A dusty M4 rested a few feet away, and an M9 pistol rested in its holster at his side. A combat knife was strapped to his calf.

He stared at the horizon.

He was armed to the teeth and troubled by a thousand questions burning in his head. He was lost in a world forsaken by sense, order and civilization.

The city stood lonely in the distance.

He started walking. Hopefully there were answers there.
