There's been a lot of talk on the news of, well, zombie-like incidents.

Here are my thoughts.

These are all or most of the bigger cases... let me just start off by saying/listing some ways that zombies could be possible, but not how we think of them.

1. Brain Parasites: Toxoplasmosa gondii takes over our brains, forcing us to lose our self-preservation & rational thought.

2. Neurotoxins: Use a poison (such as tetrodotoxin from a fugu) to greatly slow down bodily functions to a death-like state, then use drugs like Datura stramonium (or other alkaloids) to bring them back to a trancy zombie-like state.

3. Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, aka “Mad Cow Disease“: causes zombie-like symptoms.

4. Neurogenesis: Use stem cells to re-grow the dead brain stem of a brain-dead patient, resulting in a mindless body shambling around.

5. Nanobots: microscopic, self-replicating robots, that can set up neural connections in the brain to replace damaged ones. By leaving the brain stem intact but destroying the cortex, they can effectively create a zombie.

Theoretically, all of these are possible. For some reason, there have been a LOT of biting cases recently, as well as "rabies" and "mad cow disease" related incidents recently...

**UPDATE**

5/31

A new story/article was edited in, about a man who killed somebody and ate their brain and heart. (Just recently, might I add.)

Also added an article about a man who threw his intestines at the police, and stabbed himself over 50 times. Wow. (This happened on the 30th)

Lovely.

**UPDATE**

6/1

A new story/article was edited in, about a man who fed a kitten to a snake and emailed it to the police, saying: “Once you kill and taste blood it’s impossible to stop. I’ll be back — and this time the victims won’t be animals.”

Chilling.

Will keep you guys updated.

That's the scary part, drugs or not, people going all people-hungry suddenly from whatever may be the cause kinda puts you in to prospective of how "likely" some of these Zombie-like cases really are; due to infection or malfunctions.

If real life zombies actually happen I will be the happiest person in the world! Not for the fact that millions of people will die, but just because I will be able to do whatever I want whenever I want. That sounds like a heaven in hell

I'm not sure if you're being serious, but you do realize that if zombies actually did happen... there would, EVENTUALLY, be no more internet, electricity, quick modes of transportation(cars, trains, airplanes), major energy sources, cable television, movies, etc.(the list could go for all the things we, I include myself, take for granted everyday). You need many people to perform all these tasks and if a majority of the world becomes zombies, then there would be no one able to sustain all these things.

You also would constantly be worried about finding food, shelter, security, etc. and also the fear of being killed and even turning into one, so there's also a dilemma of contemplating suicide. I'm not exactly sure what "doing whatever you want whenever you want" entails, but I'm sure it would get pretty old fast. Especially living without experiencing what we currently have and even worse: having it taken away from us. There would be no reset button or start over like a video game.

Sure it would be kind of cool to shoot up some zombies. But I'd be far from the happiest person if this were to actually happen. Maybe you should reevaluate all the the extenuating circumstances that you failed to discern. ;)

Honestly, none of this bothers me, DUE to the Internet.

Sites like 4chan and Reddit make me more prepared than scared.

In all honesty (without sounding like a lunatic) I could kill another human being, if I had to, with no mental effect at all. Well, if they were after me, that is.

Without getting super technical and involved here, those things are NOT essential to survive. Sadly enough, the world is almost strictly dependent on technology and having everything being taken care of or provided for them. It it came down to it, those who prepared the RIGHT way, would have today's conveniences last on their mind. As long as you have a roof over your head, food and water, you're good to go.

Dude I was joking. And as far as all the circumstances that I may have to face in a zombie apocalypse I am prepared for. I've been hoarding cans of food from my family every time we go shopping

But seriously I think that the people on these forums have a better chance at surviving then most everyday people.

This is where I disagree with you...while everybody on the forums has a fond interest in zombies, it does not change the fact that most of us are either less than 13 years old (I'm only 15), or out of shape due to playing video games and sitting in front of your computer all day...I used to be active on the forums, but for the last year and a half, I've stopped being a computer junkie as much and I've been playing a lot more sports than i used to (ran track this year, played baseball, basketball, and football) so while in theory some of the adults would stand a decent shot, kids like me or those who are out of shape are hopelessly screwed due to the fact that we wouldn't be able to look out for ourselves very well

Link to comment

Mmm...I feel that you're wrong about the age thing. Most people on this forum seem about 16+ and as for the out of shape thing I can only vouch for myself. I go to college and have a huge hour and a half gap in between my classes so I work out to pass the time.

I'm in decent shape, and if the zombies come, people will need us because we are the people who have studied up on these things. They will always need people like us, we will be the leaders in the zombie apocalypse, not because we're strong or fast, but because we are smart enough to know what to do.

I think I have found something that could mutate to attack humans and take over their brains. Also, might I add it is on earth currently, and attacking any species population that grows too large in number, in the Amazon jungle. It is a parasitic spore based fungus called CORDYCEPS. It attacks any species from ants to lizards. It completely takes over the body and uses it as a means of transportation. The ant (or whatever the case may be) then is forced to climb higher and higher until the back of the head explodes with spores and the cycle repeats.

I know it's not your typical zombie, but as you said, if there were zombies, they wouldn't be the movie zombies we all know and love. Here is a video on it. After further research you would find bigger animals it has attacked. As I said, it only pin-points species that have high population numbers. Once they die off enough, it moves on. Think about that.

most of us are either less than 13 years old

So this forum is full of squeakers? >___

Anyway, I personally think those cases involve cannibals and people under influence of heavy drugs. Even if there was a zombie outbreak, we all know that our military is not as stupid as the military shown in movies, games, novels etc.

In fiction, the military practically has to be overrun, in order for our main characters/survivors to feel threatened and scary and not to just barricade themselves somewhere and wait for extraction or a carpet bombing that realistically should happen two days after an outbreak.

And who the hell is able bite off an arm just with his teeth, or penetrate a leg with his fingers without using advanced weaponry such as nail-claws and razor-braces.

I know how cannibals ''kill'' their victims, but they need a long time until they can finally ''take a good bite'' off those arms because the human skin is pretty much resistent to nails and teeth.

And since zombies are just walking corpses, they would eventually die because they would slowly decay. A walking skull can't move can he? I know that it's about parasites here and that the heart still might work and that blood still might be in the bodies of the infected, however most nerve cells would be destroyed so that those infected are unable to move anyway with only their nerves still intact in their brains.

And don't expect those guys to grow tentacles out of their heads and jump around lol.

Link to comment

Yes, the brain would eventually die and the body would eventually decay. Before that happened however, (in the case of cordyceps) before that happened, we would have thousands of people suddenly climbing skyscrapers and high trees. Before you know it, the air would be filled with cordycep spores, and there would be nothing the military could do, except kill off innocent civilians in mass quantities.

The point that the zombies mentioned in this thread, would not be the zombies we know on tv has already been brought up. This is merely to put the realistic "zombie" type illnesses into perspective. Obviously in the game and on movies the zombies are limited to arms reach, and only have one main form of attack. That is why everyone loves them, just sit back and shoot with nothing shooting back. If one person wound up with a cordycep fungus parasite, no one would know until it was too late.

He would look like an adventurous person who felt like climbing. Before you know it 20 people are infected, then 100, then 1000. It would spread like wild fire. The military might have precautions taken for "zombies" as we know them. But nature has loopholes. Air-born spores would be very hard to control.

JUST THINK ABOUT POLLEN. It affects everyone on the planet negatively, (aside from plants) and there is nothing to be done. Nature created this, and there won't be any kind of man made thing that could stop it. The only thing stopping RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK, is mutation and adaption. It is only a matter of time.

I myself play basketball almost every day and always find myself running from trouble. Bout to be 17 so I think I have a good chance of running to the nearest PAWN shop and stealing a few M16s and a couple clips. And besides that point please don't bring in some The Last of Us bullcrap. I think Mad Cow disease is more realistic than some fungi infected retards.

Link to comment

Face it, it's only bugs right now. But don't you think if I know about it, some top secret government scientist has seen it before. The parasite already completely takes over the brain and controls the body to do whatever it wants. It does that on it's own. No tweaking or changes. You don't think they are changing and altering the hell out of this thing to see the potential.

I'm not saying the government would be the reason for something like this getting put on mankind, but if one person has the power, another one wants it.

I mean think about it. The government alters it and tests it on life sentence prisoners. They of course die off after their task is complete. Some other government hears of the success and hires spies, which lead to covert ops, which lead to war. In the midst of that destruction and mayhem, the parasite containment gets breached and becomes air-born.

Or worse the parasite is still contained but taken and put into the wrong hands. Far-fetched? I think not. I'm sure the governments of this world have had their hands dipped in a little of everything that could have potential for controlling humans. The nazis broke the ice. I'm sure, while all the other governments were shaking their heads and frowning at Germany for what they did in that time, there were plenty of heads turning and ears listening in awe of what they proposed. A Super-human army and anti-gravity propulsion....

Don't think I am shooting your ideas down. Mad cow disease is in this same book. All of the above mentioned points are possible in this scenario. All I am saying is, this parasite already makes it's victim a "zombie." In all aspects. It just has a different task for it's victim. THAT wouldn't be hard to change.

So I looked up the Cordyceps fungi and I found out that it has over 400 species. All of them are similiar, parasitic fungi that invade bodies of insects and other arthropods.

A lot of them were pretty helpful in medicine, some were used in human organ transplants because they suppressed the immune system of bodies

There was a case where they were used as drugs in China by a female athlete in 1933. She set world records ONLY when she was in Asian territory. At events outside of Asia or mainly China she couldn't achieve her victories she had in her homeland which supected the use of drugs. The coach then admitted that the athletes were taking cordyceps at his request. So we can be sure that the effect on humans would be enhanced speed and stamina rather than a never ending hunger or an over boost of adrenaline and rage.

There are also eaten in Asian restaurants, mainly in China,Korea and Nepal. People's choice are soups with cordyceps, silkie seahorse and some other stuff.

The caterpillar-like things on there are cordyceps.

Funny you mention that because I have actually taken cordyceps before as a health supplement. It actually supposedly has many great health benefits in humans. ;)

Link to comment

Yes, cordyceps are used as a treatment option in medicine. This only proves my point. They have already begun testing the potentials. Not to go all Takeo on you, but as the yin yang stories go: Everything bad has some good, and everything good has some bad. I believe this to be true. When is the last time you made a pros and cons list, and never had anything on the cons side. Even if it is something as little as losing an hour of sleep. Pros normally outweigh the cons, but the cons are still there.

Getting back on topic, this is exactly the way this works. Cordyceps are recently being used as medicine, showing there are positive sides to this fungus. The negative side boldly stands out in my eyes, however. If I were a government scientist, given the task to create a virus or something of that nature, that could control the human body, I would start with something that already does these things on other species. If science has taught us anything, it is that things on a quantum scale can always be scaled up. It is just a matter of technology being advanced enough.

This is all speculation and hypothetical situations, I know. But hey, that's what we do right? Theorize about the unknown. Cordyceps may (and probably will) be used in medicine for the rest of man's time here on earth, and never be used as a "zombie maker" of sorts. But I thought the title was Real. Life. Zombies. My Thoughts...

Well these were mine.
